Starting the Adventure

Your journey to Lake Isabelle begins at the Long Lake Trailhead in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts located just a short drive from the charming mountain town of Nederland.

The trail meanders through a dense forest of pine and fir trees, offering glimpses of the surrounding peaks through the foliage. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as marmots, pika, and even the occasional moose or deer. The has a very gradual slight incline most of the way, so it’s not too challenging and perfect for someone trying to acclimate to the altitude.

Wildflower Wonderland

Shortly after leaving the trailhead, you’ll enter the spectacular Long Lake Valley. As the name suggests, it is quite a long lake, so you’ll be hiking along it for about a half mile. During the summer months, this area transforms into a wildflower wonderland, with vibrant hues of blue, purple, yellow, and white carpeting the meadows. It’s a breathtaking sight and an excellent spot for photography.

The Alpine Oasis: Lake Isabelle

As you approach Lake Isabelle, the terrain becomes rockier and and a little steeper. You can see the peaks above Lake Isabelle in the distance, getting closer with every step.

The final stretch of the trail takes you to the shore of the crystal-clear alpine lake, surrounded by towering peaks. The lake’s icy waters are fed by the melting glaciers high above, giving it a stunning blue-green hue.

Lake Isabelle offers a peaceful retreat, making it an ideal spot for a picnic, a serene moment of reflection, or simply basking in the sheer beauty of your surroundings. If you catch it on a day with no wind, you can see an almost perfect reflection of the peaks on the lake.

Isabelle Glacier

If you are still wanting more, the trail continues on to Isabelle Glacier. This adds another 2 miles round trip to the hike, and is harder and steeper than the trail to the lake. But if you’re up for the adventure, it is well worth it!

You’ll hike along the shore of Lake Isabelle and continue back until you reach Isabelle Glacier. From there, you can decide to make a climb up to see over the glacier, and beyond, or turn around and return.

Conclusion

The Lake Isabelle Trail is a true Colorado treasure, showcasing the state’s natural beauty at its finest. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a novice explorer, this trail offers a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. As you stand by the shore of Lake Isabelle, surrounded by towering peaks and pristine wilderness, you’ll understand why this trail is a favorite among those who seek to connect with the majesty of the Rocky Mountains.
